Telecommunications
In the electronic world telecommunications refers to the communicating of information, including data, text, pictures, voice and video over long distance.‘Data’ refers to digital transmission. "Telecommunications" or "telecom" refers to voice or a mix of voice and data, both analog and digital. Although all long distance trunks are digital, and digital lines get closer to the end user all the time, there is still analog service into homes and offices.
Traditionally telecommunications referred to telephone related areas such as switch boards, exchanges, phone lines and telephone equipment and the transmission of voice. However, over time the word has come to mean much more. Telecommunications is now the modern, complex and fascinating fast paced industry that affects every aspect of our lives from simple voice telephone calls through to access to the Internet, high speed data communications, satellite communications, surfing the World Wide Web, fax transmissions, video conferencing and cable TV.
