Media Structures
Explore New Zealand's unique media environment.
We live in fast changing times which make it critical to debate the global and local forces shaping our future media environment.
Why is NZ unique?
- There is no national newspaper.
- Radio New Zealand is the only public service broadcaster in the Reithian sense.
- New Zealand has more radio stations than any other nation per head of population.
- BUT only a handful of people own the media companies.
- TVNZ is state owned but is highly commercial.
- TV3 is commercially owned but is given public money to make programmes.
- Not everyone has access to broadband.
- We are still sorting out our media commons
Do these things matter?
