Media Agencies

Regulation: who sets the rules and codes?

  • Nearly all media communicate a combination of commercial messages and editorial content.
  • The rules are determined by a mixture of regulation, laws and agreements, which vary from country to country.
  • New Zealand's model of mixed regulation and self-regulation is looked to all over the world as a unique set of compromises between commercial interests and media content that serves citizens' information needs and the public good.
  • In New Zealand, all local media content (including websites)is subject to relevant laws.
  • Much of the media content (programmes, films, news interviews etc) is regulated by rules set by agencies under government jurisdiction - regulatory agencies.
  • New Zealand's print and advertising content standards are self-regulated by their industry members - self-regulatory agencies.
