Funding
Film-makers can apply to funding bodies for money to make their films either as a loan (NZFC) or a grant (CNZ). Some film-makers fund their own work – the advent of digital film-making has made this more possible than in the past.
New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC)
The New Zealand Film Commission (NZ Film) has the statutory responsibility to assist in the making, promotion, distribution and exhibition of films made in New Zealand by New Zealanders on New Zealand subjects. NZFC does not produce film. It provides loans and equity financing to New Zealand film-makers. It also assists with training and professional development within the industry. Funds are available for feature and short films which meet NZFC criteria.
HEADSTRONG
HEADSTRONG (Headstrong) is a feature film development company funded through NZFC supporting innovative low budget digital feature films.
Creative New Zealand (CNZ)
Creative New Zealand (Creative NZ) is a government-funded body supporting the arts.
CNZ’s Screen Innovation Production Fund (Screen Innovation) is a partnership between CNZ and NZFC. It provides grants to emerging and experienced moving image makers for innovative, experimental and non-commercial moving image productions.
CNZ’s Maori Arts Board, Te Waka Toi, provides funding for Maori artists, including film-makers.
Te Mangai Paho
Te Mangai Paho (Te Mangai Paho) is a Crown Entity established to provide funding to a national network of Maori radio stations and for the production of Maori language television programmes, radio programmes and music CDs.
New Zealand On Air (NZOA)
New Zealand On Air (NZ on Air) is a government funded body which funds radio and television programmes about New Zealand and New Zealand interests. Its mission is to reflect and foster the development of NZ culture and identity.
NZ Screen Council/Purangiaho Aotearoa
The NZ Screen Council/Purangiaho Aotearoa (Screen Council) is a government advisory group responsible for facilitating growth via targets identified by the Screen Production Taskforce.
