This section outlines the classification and censor ratings that apply to New Zealand Free to Air television.

Advertising is not classified.

Advertising content and the time of placement is self-regulated by the media industry.

You may complain to the Advertising Standards Authority about an advertisement under the industry Advertising Code of Practice.

Free to Air TV

  • G – General: screened at any time
  • PGR – Parental Guidance Recommended:
    Programmes containing material more suited for mature audiences but not necessarily unsuitable for child viewers when subject to the guidance of a parent or an adult.
    PGR programmes may be screened between 9am and 4pm, and after 7pm until 6am.
  • AO – Adults Only programmes may be screened between midday and 3pm on weekdays and and after 8.30pm until 5am. (known as the “watershed”)
  • AO 9.3Opm – Adults Only 9.30pm - 5am

BSA

Most broadcasters have a standards' appraiser within their organisation.

News, sports and live programming is exempt from classification. However, producers are required to be mindful that young people may be viewers and take all reasonable steps to ensure that sports and live programming content conforms with the underlying timeband.

Free to Air Broadcasters collaborate under the Television Broadcasting Council,  particularly on “Getting it Right for Children” with regard to advertisements
