Distribution
While some film-makers are content to show their work just to family and friends, most hope to reach a much wider audience. One means of doing this through established channels involves marketing to festivals, sales agents and distributors.
Sales agents take films to international film and television markets (Masterguide markets).
A distributor will license the rights to broadcast or screen a film. Where a film does not have NZFC support, the film-makers or production company will organise the film’s marketing, sales and distribution.
New Zealand Film Commission
New Zealand Film (the sales agency arm of the New Zealand Film Commission) acts as the sales agent for the majority of feature and short films with NZFC investment. (NZFilm's marketing feature films)
If a film not funded by NZFC is screened at an approved film festival, NZFC may then agree to market that film. The NZFC website has a list of all Australasian film distributors.
NZShortFilm.com
NZShortFilm.com (NZ Short Film) promotes NZ short films to the public locally and overseas and allows registered site visitors to view films and contact contact film-makers. Short films are available free on the site.
