Media Codes

Codes are documents that outline the rules for each type of media content.

Each NZ media industry:

  • Agrees to comply with their practice codes
  • Is responsible under their codes for their media content

For example: under the Broadcasting Act 1989, every broadcaster is responsible for maintaining in its programmes, and their presentation, standards that are consistent with:

  • The observance of good taste and decency
  • The maintenance of law and order
  • The privacy of the individual
  • The principle that when controversial issues of public importance are discussed, reasonable efforts are made, or reasonable opportunities are given, to present significant points of view, either in the same programme or in other programmes within the period of current interest

Codes:

  • Can be used to judge media fairness
  • Outline media rules for areas of concern such as decency and social responsibility
  • Ensure rights relating to privacy are protected
  • Ensure that the special interests of children are protected

All codes are reviewed regularly with input from audiences through invited submissions.
