While magazines bring in revenue from sales, the bulk of their revenue comes from advertiser dollars. KiaOra: your Air New Zealand Magazine is described on the ACP website, for example, as offering advertisers ‘a highly-desirable captive audience’.

ACP Media  is New Zealand’s largest magazine publisher, with some 55 magazines and more than a dozen websites. It circulates over 60 million copies each year. It is a subsidiary of ACP Magazines Ltd in Australia, a division of PBL Media Ltd.

The Magazine Publishers Association  is the national organisation for magazine publishing and aims to foster and maintain high standards in magazine publishing. Members are required to audit all their publications on a regular basis to verify their circulation figures. These figures tell advertisers how many copies of a particular magazine are bought or distributed free of charge.

Magazine Publishers of America , known as MPA, is the industry association for consumer magazines. Established in 1919, the MPA represents more than 240 domestic publishing companies with approximately 1,400 titles, more than 80 international companies and more than 100 associate members. Staffed by magazine industry specialists, the MPA is headquartered in New York City, with an office of government affairs in Washington, DC. The MPA website has a very useful glossary of magazine research terminology .
